What a house slab needs before the pour

A house slab is decided before the concrete truck arrives. If the mesh is on the ground, the falls run back to the house, or the pipes are not sleeved, the pour is early.

Levels and falls

The pad is cut and filled to the set-out. Edge forms hold the line, including a curved driveway. Falls go away from the building. Service pipes that come up through the slab are sleeved now.

Plastic and mesh

Plastic goes down under the slab. Reinforcing mesh sits on bar chairs so the steel is in the concrete. Chairs are there to be stood on during the pour. Mesh flat on the dirt is not ready.

The pour

On a wide slab the concrete is placed with a boom pump, booked for that day with the agitator. The crew screeds to the forms. Driveways are broomed. Slabs under cover are trowelled. Joints follow the shape of the slab: a garage opening, a path, a change in width.

Driveways with the slab

The driveway to the garage is often poured with the house surrounds. Side paths and the alfresco slab are the same job if the levels are set together. A driveway that is part of subdividing the block is priced with the civil work, not as a separate garden path.
